Is the Bible Scientific?

We seem to have lost our confidence in the last 100 years. It's time to get it back.

All truth is God’s truth.

We think differently now than our ancestors did. When they looked at the sky in the black, pre-electricity sky they saw images and recounted the legends and folklore that had been passed down using the sky as a mnemonic device.

Their central question about shooting stars and other amazing phenomena was “What does it mean?”

Moderns ask, “What’s it made of?” and “How does it work?” We feel that, through science, we’ve looked behind the magician’s curtain and just want to know how this particular trick works.

Is the Bible scientific?

I’ve spent a lot of time answering that question and it led to an entire season of the Thread podcast (season four which you can find here on audio and also on Youtube.) Now I’m back to the same question in today’s video because it’s so central to recovering our confidence that the Bible is a reliable guide to truth.

Recent Efforts

Much work has been done in Creationist circles to establish that the Genesis 1-3 narrative can be reconciled to the current findings of science and that there was a literal seven-day creation with 24 hours in a day.

I can totally sympathize with the goal, but I feel that the efforts are misguided. We are giving up our domain, meaning, to beg membership in the science club.

Science is short for “scientific method” which is a newcomer to the human search for truth. We’ve only been using it for a little over 300 years but it has been amazingly fruitful in discovering more of the truth about the physical side of life. The modern world with all its pervasive tech is the product of this method.

The scientific method is great about questions related to math, energy, and matter, but meaning? That’s out of its league. That’s where metaphysics begins and physics ends.

Human thriving is built out of meaning. Love, hate, purpose, loneliness, courage, and joy—chemical reactions alone or something more?

Poetry, song, story, dreams, visions, serendipity, prophecies that come true. Humans are more than atoms. We are a bridge between the earth and sky realm.
